1941. What a year. Germany attacks Russia, the Japanese surprise attack the U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor, U.S. and Britain declare war on Japan, Congress passes the Lend-Lease Act, giving President Roosevelt the power to sell, lend, and lease war supplies to other nations, Unemployment at 9.9%, Cost of a first-class stamp is $0.03, the NY Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers to win the World Series 4 to 1 and IAM Local Lodge 1562 is born.
August 5th 1941. A collection of 48 people sign a petition and are granted Charter to the International Association of Machinists union otherwise known as IAM. Later (on January 1st 1965) it would become the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
Thomas Hoffman, George M. Kessler and 46 other wise people decided it was time to secure not only their futures but the futures of generations to come. They decided it was time for a union.
A lot has happened since that day in 1941. WWII started and ended, Vietnam War started and ended and the Korean War started and ended. Through it all the Local 1562 was there for the workers, the community and the country. The company they work for had changed hands a number of times but the union was still there. The people were united and strong.
Today the Local 1562 is still here, 90 members strong. Helping the community with fund drives and donations. Giving not only money and support but manpower as well.
Working to make "Made in America" not just a slogan and doing it with pride.
